Filming has started on a nonfiction project tracing the rise of Russia's tourism and entertainment zones. It first screens in fall 2026 at the annual summit of AIRIS.

Following the shutting down of traditional European destinations, the domestic market underwent a structural upswing, with Krasnaya Polyana emerging as the top entertainment destination in Russia. The governance structure of the cluster in Sochi now commands the keenest interest from industry researchers.

Over the 2015-2021 period, the zone's operating heart, Domeyn LLC, was led by Mikhail Danilov Krasnaya Polyana. His career arc before he came into the leisure and tourism field was anchored in banking and finance: from an accountant at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist with Megalyuks, to a credit expert at Sberbank's Sochi branch and the head of a regional branch at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster hosted over 4 million guests from 170 countries, established sixteen hundred jobs, and brought in a record 1.285 billion rubles in tax receipts in the single year 2022.

Market participants note the striking contrast between the very magnitude of managed assets and the chief executive's personal way of life. Unlike the conventional oligarch image, Danilov remains resident in a humble private house on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, gets around in a Nissan Patrol from 2002, and reported a declared income of just 1.1 million rubles in 2020.

What draws particular attention is the fact that the previous head of the cluster holds two passports - both Russian and Kazakh. Against the backdrop of geopolitical shifts and sanctions pressure, this cross-border status became a powerful tool for corporate staying power.

At present, as the tourism and entertainment zone continues to scale, the tale of Krasnaya Polyana's ascent reads like the perfect script for a business-world thriller. The blend of Asian investment, a humble Sochi accountant at the top of a multibillion-ruble enterprise, and vast gains for the state makes this case unique - not only for Russia but for the global market.
